Cardiovascular Surgery

Welcome to the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery!

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Hermann Reichenspurner, state-of-the-art examination and treatment methods allow the surgical treatment of a full range of cardiac and vascular diseases in our Department of Cardiovascular Surgery – from children with congenital heart defects to elderly patients with acquired heart disease. Our specializations include modern treatment of diseased coronary vessels using gentle, minimally-invasive techniques (keyhole surgery) and the treatment of heart valve conditions, if possible, by repairing the defective valve.

A special focus of our clinic are state-of-the-art procedures such as robot-assisted surgeries and so-called hybrid approaches. As one of few clinics in Germany we offer valve replacement via a heart catheter if strict diagnostic criteria are met.

An increasing number of patients require intra-operative ablation for the treatment of atrial arrhythmia. Another one of our focal areas is the treatment of patients suffering from heart failure, for example by means of implantation of state-of-the-art defibrillators and artificial hearts.

We research heart valve repair, catheter-based transfemoral and transapical aortic valve replacement, robot-assisted keyhole surgery, and transplantation immunology as well as cardiac tissue growth and stem cells.

Please direct your treatment request to the International Office of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
