Clinic for Visceral Transplant Surgery

The Clinic for Visceral Transplant Surgery, led by Prof. Dr. Lutz Fischer, offers its patients  liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants.

With nearly 200 transplants performed, including 20 pediatric liver transplants per year, we are the largest transplant center in northern Germany and the largest pediatric liver transplant center in Europe. In addition, our clinic has established Europe’s first living liver donation program.

We perform transplants on adults and children from all over Germany and from abroad. Almost all German scientific clinical publications on liver transplantation in children stem from our clinic.

For foreign patients who are NOT members of the Eurotransplant zone we offer only living transplants – i.e. a suitable organ donor from the patient’s family must be brought along.

We offer all new kidney transplant techniques, including living kidney donation and AB0-incompatible transplantation as well as pediatric kidney transplants in collaboration with our Zentrum für Kinderheilkunde (Engl.: Pediatrics Center). In addition, we perform combined transplants, e.g., kidney/pancreas and liver/kidney.

Focus areas of our research include transplantation immunology, immunogenetics, tissue engineering and immunosuppression in organ transplantation, developing 3D-guided navigation procedures for liver resection.
