Urology

Welcome to the Clinic of Urology.

The Clinic for Urology is an innovative department treating men, women and children and offering extensive diagnostic, conservative and surgical approaches. Under the direction of Professor Dr. Margit Fisch, the only female chief physician of a urological clinic in Germany, it is the goal of our world-renowned center of excellence to offer patient-oriented state-of-the art medicine.

Professor Fisch is a member of several international associations and served on the board of the German Society for Urology (DGU) from 2003 to 2008. From 2002 to 2008 she was president of the European Society for Genito-Urinary Reconstructive Surgeons.

Each year we perform more than 2,300 oncological, functional, and reconstructive inpatient treatments. Together with the Martini-Klinik we perform the greatest number of radical prostatectomies for prostate cancer in Europe and worldwide. Via a small abdominal incision, a microsurgical technique and surgical loupes or robot-assisted, we achieve above-average success rates in preserving potency and continence.

We are also a leader in reconstructive surgeries of the external genitalia, laparoscopic surgeries of the kidney, and holmium laser surgeries for benign enlargement of the prostate. We offer fluorescence-based, photodynamic (HEXVIX®) diagnosis and therapy of urinary bladder tumors.

Together with the Altona Children’s Hospital and the Clinic of Pediatric Surgery we are also well on our way to becoming north Germany’s largest children’s urological clinic.

We regularly participate in international conferences such as the “European and American Meeting of Urology.” The department itself is the organizer of the “International Meeting of Reconstructive Urology” and host of the “European Robotic Urology Symposium” and the 2011 “SIU World Meeting.”

Our research deals extensively with the various branches of uro-oncology and reconstructive surgery. In addition to numerous clinical projects regarding prostate, kidney cell, and urinary bladder cancer, tests are performed in the clinic’s own laboratory to determine the formation and dissemination of urological cancers, particularly on the genetic level. We are concerned as well with the mechanisms of urethral reconstruction at the cellular level.

The Clinic of Urology employs 21 doctors. 39 nurses attend to the wellbeing of patients.
