Pediatric hematology and oncology

Welcome to the Clinic of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.

The Clinic of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, under the direction of  Professor Dr. Stefan Rutkowski, is one of the largest clinics of its kind in Germany and Europe. We treat malignant diseases in children and adolescents.

About 1,000 pediatric outpatients are treated in our department every year. All patients are treated according to the certified guidelines of the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH). Our institute also chairs multicenter clinical studies for the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CoALL) and brain tumors in childhood (HIT 2000, CPT-SIOP 2000).

Our expertise encompasses the treatment of leukemia, brain tumors, bone tumors and embryonic tumors. Our clinic is Germany’s largest treatment center for hematologic disorders such as thalassemia and sickle cell anemia. We are also known for our clinical expertise in the fields of immunodeficiency, childhood stroke and coagulation disorders such as von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and thrombophilia.

Our scientific programs focus on signal transduction in leukemia, DNA repair mechanisms, metastatic processes in bone tumors, the biology and treatment of neuroblastoma, and the molecular biology of brain tumors such as medulloblastoma, ependymoma, CNS PNET, and rhabdoid tumors (ATRT). Our institute is at the forefront of research of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare immunodeficiency occurring in early childhood. A comprehensive European project studying HLH and funded by the EU with partners from several European countries is chaired by our institute. The clinic is also internationally known for its scientific and clinical expertise in the study of von Willebrand disease. Our laboratory offers a broad range of molecular genetic tests for the most prevalent hematologic diseases such as hemorrhage and thrombophilia as well as for tumor predisposition syndromes.

The clinic participates in an interdisciplinary stem cell transplantation program for the treatment of malignant diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumors, including brain tumors, and benign hematological disorders like immunodeficiencies and congenital metabolic diseases. We have much experience with transplantation treatment of the rare immunodeficiency hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. We also specialize in haploidentical stem cell transplantation. Our stem cell transplantation program is one of the largest in Europe. IEach year, we perform transplantations on more than 40 children. Our patients are treated by specialized pediatricians and pediatric nurses attending to the particular needs of children undergoing stem cell transplantation.

A dedicated psychosocial team supports our clinical activities.
