Hematology and Oncology, including the Pneumology Section

Welcome to the Clinic of Hematology and Oncology.

In the Clinic of Hematology and Oncology, under the direction of Professor Dr. Carsten Bokemeyer, we primarily treat patients with cancer of the internal organs and the hematopoietic system. Our specialties are the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer (leukemia and lymphoma), blood clotting disorders, germ cell tumors (e.g. testicular cancer), and malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, connective tissue, respiratory system, and the head and neck. The Pneumology Section primarily treats patients with pulmonary hypertension.

For all treatments we work closely with the patient and his family in developing customized treatment tailored to the patient’s particular condition and situation. This integrative approach allows us to consider all aspects of a possible tumor.

Comprehensive diagnosis precedes the start of each treatment. This phase is called "tumor staging". After staging, the attending physician discusses the findings with the patient and his family and proposes a treatment. Depending on the patient’s condition there are three main options:

  • surgical treatment
  • medical therapy
  • radio therapy

The medical therapy is represented not only by the ordinary chemotherapy, but also by new methods, such as immunotherapy or molecular target-oriented therapies like anti-body and hormone therapy. Treatment may comprise one or more of the above options.

After the treatment, specially trained physical therapists develop a personalized physical therapy plan for each patient. If necessary, the patient is accompanied by a pain management specialist during treatment to make the arduous process as pain-free as possible. Our psychologists offer mental support to all patients and families.

Patients gain the benefits of our years of experience in diagnosis and treatment in an interdisciplinary environment so that all symptoms of their illnesses can be treated reliably and competently. The Clinic of Oncology and Hematology represents an active and central part of the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH). In a university medical center, research and teaching also play major roles. This combination leads to the highest possible quality of care in comparison to other similar facilities around the world. Results of the latest cancer studies are incorporated into the daily work of our professors and doctors.

In our research we experimentally and clinically develop "molecular target-oriented therapies", which turn off mechanisms crucial to the growth and/or development of metastases of malignant tumor cells. We explore this form of therapy for leukemia and solid tumors such as lung, colorectal, and renal cell cancer.

Each year we treat approximately 8,300 inpatients and 17,400 outpatients.
