Welcome to the Deutsche Stimmklinik®.
Performing more than 500 phonosurgical procedures each year, the phonosurgery department, led by Professor Dr. Markus Hess, is one of the largest centers of excellence in Germany.
The term phonosurgery refers to surgical interventions for improving the quality of voice. For over 10 years, phonosurgery has been the focus of our treatment of voice disorders. Our surgical spectrum is limited exclusively to phonosurgical procedures. Prof. Dr. Markus Hess, an internationally renowned expert, has over 20 years of experience in vocal treatment and phonosurgery.
One focus of phonosurgery are the usually outpatient phonomicrosurgical interventions under general anesthesia for benign vocal fold changes such as polyps, cysts, edema, thickening of the epithelium, and nodules. In addition to this highly specialized microtechnology, we offer voice improving procedures under local anesthesia as alternatives for certain disorders. In well over 90% of cases, these two methods lead to improvement in the quality of voice.
Quality and tolerance of the procedures are further improved by the use of state-of-the-art technology and special laser methods involving the KTP laser and the CO2 laser. We perform these gentle surgical methods on patients from Germany and abroad and on singers, actors, and professional speakers with voice disorders.
In cases of paralysis of the larynx (e.g. vocal cord paralysis), the voice may be improved phonosurgically by medialization of the paralyzed vocal cord. In addition to vocal fold augmentation with different absorbable or non-absorbable materials (fillers such as autologous fat, hyaluronic acid, collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, dermis, etc.), we frequently perform laryngeal framework surgeries such as thyreoplasty and arytenoid adduction. All surgeries can also be performed as inpatient procedures.
For pre- and postoperative diagnosis of voice disorders on an outpatient basis, we perform digital video endoscopy, high resolution microlaryngoscopy, flexible tip-chip videostroboscopy, electronic voice field measurement, voice range profile analysis, computer-based measurement of hoarseness, auditory and electroacoustic vocal sound analysis, broadband and narrowband spectral analysis, fundamental frequency and formant analysis, electroglottography, voice stress testing, online videokymography, high speed cinematography with offline kymography, percutaneous electromyography, and lung function testing with flow volume curve.
Botulinum toxin injections (known as Botox injections) can help improve the quality of voice in cases of specific neurological disorders such as focal dystonia and spasmodic dysphonia. Treatment of professional voice disorders, for example in singers and actors, complements the therapeutic spectrum.
Detailed comprehensive diagnosis is usually complete in one day. Afterward, a thorough consultation takes place. Surgery is scheduled: under certain conditions and with proper planning it can be performed the next day, usually on an outpatient basis. Postoperative check-ups can be carried out by a specialist in the patient’s home country. A follow-up visit is usually recommended after 3 months to gauge long-term success.
Our clinic employs 4 doctors, 2 psychologists, 4 speech therapists, 2 audiometric assistants and 2 nurses.
