Spine Surgery Center

Welcome to the Spine Surgery Center of the Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery!

Under the direction of PD Dr. med. Lennart Viezens, the Spine Surgery Center, an innovative special division of the UKE, offers its patients spine disease treatment at the highest level internationally. As an integral part of the University Spine Center at the UKE, the department has been certified by the German Spine Society (Deutsche Wirbelsäulengesellschaft (DWG)) as a maximum care spine center (Level 1 center) of the DWG since 2018.

PD Dr. Lennart Viezens and his interdisciplinary team of trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons treat the entire spectrum of degenerative, inflammatory, accident-related and tumorous diseases as well as deformities of the spine. Comprehensive diagnostic options with the latest imaging and electrophysiology methods, in interdisciplinary cooperation with radiologists and neurologists, enable the patient's symptoms to be carefully clarified and a targeted and gentle individual treatment to be planned according to international standards. To that end we have at our disposal the latest surgical procedures, including open, minimally invasive and microsurgical operating techniques, intraoperative imaging and neuronavigation. A specialized anesthesia division and intensive care medicine allow the safe implementation of complex and laborious operations as well as the treatment of patients with severe pre-existing conditions.

Every year, PD Dr. Lennart Viezens and his team carry out around 1,000 interventions, from the minimally invasive to complex procedures of the highest difficulty, if required also in interdisciplinary cooperation with other surgical specialties at the hospital.

In order to enable the patient to recover quickly and painlessly after the operation, follow-up treatment is carried out in our spinal ward with specialized nursing staff, physiotherapy and osteopathy, as well as the use of appropriate pain therapy. Difficult pain syndromes are treated in an interdisciplinary manner together with specialists in pain medicine and pain psychology. For more complex rehabilitation treatments, there is cooperation with appropriate rehabilitation centers.
