Reconstructive urology

Reconstructive urology normalizes or restores bodily functions and consist of plastic-aesthetic or functional corrections.

This field is one of our clinical specialties. It is concerned with the cancers of the kidney, bladder, urinary tract, and sexual organs and with congenital malformations and acquired diseases of the urogenital tract.

In cases of tumors of the bladder we surgically form a replacement bladder from intestinal tissue. It is sometimes necessary to drain the urine via a catheter inserted through the navel. Another major area for us is reconstruction following accidents.

Our research deals with mechanisms of urethral reconstruction at a cellular level. We engage in tissue engineering and participate in clinical studies to assess this laboratory-grown transplantation tissue.
