Interventional electrophysiology

Welcome to the division of Interventional Electrophysiology.

To ensure optimal service for our patients, the Interventional Electrophysiology offers a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic methods. The care offered at the UKE University Heart & Vascular Center Hamburg is based on an interdisciplinary concept in collaboration with the Clinic of Cardiology and the Clinic of Heart and Vascular Surgery. A special consultation session is offered for examination and counseling of patients with cardiac arrhythmia.

Our electrophysiology team consisting of highly specialized physicians and appropriately qualified assistants diagnoses and treats all forms of bradycardic and tachycardic arrhythmia in three heart catheter laboratories. Modern X-ray equipment and innovative 3-D mapping and navigation techniques (CARTO®, Hansen, NavX®) are the standard in our examinations. Bradycardic arrhythmia is treated by implanting state-of-the-art pacemakers and discharge is usually possible the day after the operation. Treatment options utilizing implanted defibrillators can prevent sudden cardiac death of patients with congenital tachycardic arrhythmia, as found for example in Brugada syndrome and long Qt syndrome, and patients with coronary heart disease or dilative cardiomyopathy.

For many years, in collaboration with our Clinic of Heart and Vascular Surgery, we have been successfully implanting special high-tech devices for cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with cardiac insufficiency. Echocardiographic optimization, using methods such as tissue Doppler imaging, is a standard procedure in our clinic.

Several research areas are established in our division. One focus of current research is atrial fibrillation. This common and complex arrhythmia is examined in several sub-projects. Additional focus areas include robotic navigation, imaging, interventional procedures in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia (life-threatening tachycardia originating in the ventricles).
