Congenital heart defects

Welcome to the Clinics of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Heart Surgery.

The University Heart Center Hamburg (UHC) offers a high standard of treatment of all congenital and acquired heart defects. The pediatric heart program, led byPD Dr. Jörg Sachweh, PD Dr. Rainer Kozlik-Feldmann and Dr. Arlindo Riso, is comprised of the Clinic and Outpatient Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology and the Clinic for Pediatric Heart Surgery. We consider ourselves specialists at a center of excellence at which optimal treatment of our patients is the top priority. To ensure the best possible treatment for your child, we work closely with neonatologists, pediatric anesthesiologists, psychologists and physiotherapists.

We place great emphasis on the surgical treatment of complex heart defects as well as on non-invasive diagnostic tools and non-surgical treatment by using heart catheters. Another focus is diagnosis and treatment of heart failure and cardiac arrhythmias. The Clinic of Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Heart Surgery works closely with the Clinic of Heart & Vascular Surgery and the Clinic of Cardiology.

We work with state-of-the-art technical equipment and achieved another quantum leap with the introduction of three-dimensional real time echocardiography. The device is extremely valuable for precise diagnosis and effective treatment of complex heart defects. The three-dimensional representation allows pediatric patients (and their parents) to see and understand their individual heart diseases better, resulting in greater patient satisfaction.

We perform approximately 250 interventions annually, ranging from simple corrective procedures to the treatment of complex heart defects. A team of surgeons and nurses is on call 365 days a year for emergency surgeries. The UHC is the only clinic in Hamburg that offers inpatient treatment for children and adolescents with congenital heart defects. On the pediatric cardiology ward our qualified and friendly pediatric nurses attend to all patients individually and sympathetically.

Parents and children feel at ease in our clinics. The competent and effective treatment of young patients with heart defects is our top priority.

To optimize the treatment of our little patients, we intensively research Marfan syndrome, catheter interventional therapy, non-invasive imaging and biochemical markers of heart failure.

Our clinics employ 17 doctors and more than 50 nurses.
