Fetal medicine

In our Clinic of Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine, led by Professor Dr. Kurt Hecher, we care for and treat expectant mothers and their unborn children to enable a happy, safe pregnancy and a self-determined delivery. Our capabilities range from uncomplicated normal births to high-risk pregnancies. We closely collaborate with the directly adjacent neonatology department at the Clinic of Pediatrics and with the Clinics of Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Heart Surgery, and Human Genetics as well as with all other possibly necessary disciplines.

As part of a Europe-wide project (Eurofoetus) we conduct research of surgery in the womb, for example for feto-fetal transfusion syndrome (also known as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome) and diaphragmatic hernia. We examine the functions and diseases of the placenta and the oxygen supply to the womb. To this end, we participate in European multicenter studies.

We are one of few centers in Europe to successfully treat feto-fetal transfusion syndrome with laser therapy. More information about this procedure can be found on the pages linked here.

Some doctors in our clinic are certified for Level II and Level III prenatal diagnostics according to the criteria of the Fetal Medicine Foundation and the criteria of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ultraschall in der Medizin (DEGUM; Engl.: German society for ultrasound in medicine).
