Welcome to the Eye Clinic!

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Martin Spitzer, FEBO our Clinic for Ophthalmology, by far the largest university eye clinic in northern Germany, offers comprehensive ophthalmological care at the highest medical level.

Each year we treat more than 6,000 inpatients and almost 25,000 outpatients. We perform more than 7,000 surgeries a year, ranging from cataract and glaucoma surgeries and retina surgeries to surgeries of the tear ducts, corrective surgery for malpositioned eyes, and cornea transplants. We perform plastic surgery to correct drooping and malformed eyelids. In collaboration with an external partner we offer laser corrections of eyesight. Due to the size of our facility we are able to offer the knowledge of specialists in all areas who have clinical experience and also conduct research in their respective specialties.

A major research interest is the development of new procedures for correcting ametropia (e.g., implantation of toric lenses, analysis of laser procedures). We analyze blood flow in the eye in glaucoma cases and test new surgical treatments. We furthermore establish new treatments for diseases of the retina. To this end our scientists are developing a retina chip and performing experiments with stem cells which someday may replace diseased retina cells.
