Traumatology

Welcome to the Clinic of Traumatology.

Under the direction of Professor Dr Karl-Heinz Frosch, we primarily focus on the surgical preservation and restoration of bones, organs and tissues injured in accidents. Our surgeons are particularly skilled in treating life-threatening multiple injuries, severe pelvic and spinal injuries, bone infections, and tumors and in treating elderly patients.

We have many years of experience with injuries to the knee and shoulder joints, and when possible our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques (keyhole surgery). Since 2009 we have been certified as a supraregional trauma center.

Another part of the clinic is the Spine Center for Orthopedic Spinal Surgery. This highly specialized facility treats patients with degenerative, inflammatory, traumatic and neoplastic changes as well as deformities of the spine. In 2010 we founded Germany’s first center for pelvic surgery following orthopedic trauma, where patients with injuries and diseases of the pelvis are treated exclusively by specialists.

We also advise and treat patients with injuries of the shoulder, hip, knee or ankle joints. Patients with benign or malignant tumors of the bone and chronic or degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system are assessed in our bone tumor/osteoporosis consultation. In addition, we offer a special hand and foot consultation.

Our research interest is in new methods of healing damaged cartilage and replacing cartilage or bone. Another research focus is optimal treatment of elderly patients with osteoporosis-related bone fractures. To minimize length of hospital stay we are developing new and safer implants for treating these fractures.

Each year we treat approximately 2,900 inpatients and 2,700 outpatients. Around 90 patients are treated for multiple trauma.

The Clinic of Traumatology employs 39 doctors and 54 nurses.
