Neurology

Welcome to the Clinic of Neurology!

Under the direction of Prof. Tim Magnus and Prof. Götz Thomalla, the Department of Neurology treats patients with a wide spectrum of disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system. Our core competencies focus particularly on stroke, movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Our stroke patients have access to one of the largest certified stroke units in Germany. Apart from inpatient and outpatient care, we offer intensive treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis at our day clinic.  Together with the Department for Neurosurgery, we form a supraregional center for deep brain stimulation for patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.

As part of the University Medical Center, we are also a supraregional specialist center for complex and very rare diseases, such as:

  • Rare movement disorders (dystonia, tremor, tics, myoclonus, atypical Parkinson syndromes, chorea, stereotypic movement disorders, hemifacial spasm, spasticity)
  • Muscular (myopathies) and neuromuscular diseases (e.g. myasthenia gravis); polyneuropathies of unknown origin; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Rare headache syndromes – including one-week comprehensive treatments - (e.g. for cluster headache or idiopathic intracranial hypertension)
  • Inflammatory diseases of the nervous system, including vasculitis, neuromyelitis optica, neurosarcoidosis and other autoimmune diseases of the nervous system
  • Diseases of the arteries supplying the brain (e.g. angiopathies, moyamoya syndrome, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cavernomas)
  • Infectious diseases including HIV-associated infections and Creutzfeld-Jakob disease
  • Dementia (e.g. vascular dementia, normal pressure hydrocephalus, Alzheimer-type dementia, frontotemporal dementia)
  • Neurological diseases of genetic origin
  • Neurofibromatosis and other phakomatoses

Scientific research and the successful individual treatment of patients are inextricably linked in our clinic. Several scientific projects are being funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG; English: German Research Foundation) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to advance therapies for the benefit of our patients. Our work focuses on basic as well as treatment-oriented research in the areas of stroke, movement disorders, multiple sklerosis and headache.
