Hepatobiliary and transplant surgery

Welcome to the Clinic of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery.

The Clinic of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery, provisionally led by Prof. Dr. Lutz Fischer , offers its patients a wide range of treatments and focuses on interdisciplinary treatment of tumors of the liver, biliary tract and gall bladder and liver, kidney, and pancreas transplants.

With nearly 200 transplants performed, including 20 pediatric liver transplants per year, we are the largest transplant center in northern Germany and the largest pediatric liver transplant center in Europe. In addition, our clinic has established Europe’s first living liver donation program.

We perform transplants on adults and children from all over Germany and from abroad. Almost all German scientific clinical publications on liver transplantation in children stem from our clinic.

For foreign patients who are NOT members of the Eurotransplant zone we offer only living transplants – i.e. a suitable organ donor from the patient’s family must be brought along.

Another focus of our treatment offer is the advancement of the minimally invasive therapy of benign liver tumors and tumors of the gall bladder. Innovative therapeutic approaches, including 3D reconstructions and navigation, constitute the basis for treatment of these complex tumors. We offer all new kidney transplant techniques, including living kidney donation and AB0-incompatible transplantation as well as pediatric kidney transplants in collaboration with our Zentrum für Kinderheilkunde (Engl.: Pediatrics Center). In addition, we perform combined transplants, e.g., kidney/pancreas and liver/kidney.

Within the framework of the University Cancer Center Hamburg (UCCH) we have established the first interdisciplinary special consultation hour for patients with liver and biliary tract tumors. Our goal is to assess patients in a qualified manner with the help of many specialists during a single appointment and initiate immediate treatment.

Focus areas of our research include transplantation immunology, immunogenetics, tissue engineering, fundamental oncological research (cancer of the liver and biliary tract, metastases in the liver), immunosuppression in organ transplantation, developing 3D-guided navigation procedures for liver resection, and clinical trials for the treatment of patients with liver metastases.

Each year, we treat approximately 700 inpatients and 6,150 outpatients.

The Clinic of Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery employs 19 doctors with various specializations. 22 nurses attend to the wellbeing of patients.
