Medical education requires a high standard of hard and soft skills and special quality criteria because of the work with human beings.
The high quality level of education is the same for local and international people who work for the UKE. The rising number of international staff at the UKE, the rising number of German-natives with a migration background and the rising number of international patients reflect the increasing globalisation and networking on medical subjects in the world.
Guest doctors from all over the world bring a positive medical and cultural element to the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf and are fully integrated into all clinical departments and institutes.
The duration of a guest doctor’s stay at the UKE varies between six months and two years. The total preparation time, allowing for administration to obtain the official guest doctor status takes about 2-3 months.
The status “guest doctor“ allows direct work with patients. Guest doctors are mentored by the respective clinical department and by the International Office.
While the clinical departments are responsible for all professional matters including time schedules and goals, the International Office deals with all administrative issues.
The UKE cannot pay salary to guest doctors. Guest doctors need to give a statement on how they will finance their stay in Hamburg while working at the UKE. Living cost in Hamburg is about 900 Euro per month (rent is about 400 Euro).
In the original application the International Office requires a detailed curriculum vitae and a cover letter, stating the medical areas in which the guest doctor would prefer to work, as well as informing us of the desired time-frame. The application should also include copies of certificates and final medical exams as well as the MD certification etc. It is also necessary to be able to speak German at language level B2.
After the respective clinical department has confirmed that they are willing to accept the application we help the potential guest doctor with the following:
as well as with any other administrative issues that should arise.
The International Office of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf supports, in any way it can, guest doctors during the entire duration of their stay. This also includes help with finding an apartment, opening a bank account etc.
