The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf - UKE) is one of the largest hospitals in northern Germany and a leader in research and medical treatment. The UKE comprises more than 80 interdisciplinary collaborative clinics and institutes in 14 centers.
Founded in 1889 in a park, the hospital became a university medical center in 1934. In early 2009 we opened our new building, uniting tradition with state-of-the-art technology.
As a university hospital we combine research, science and education with medical treatment. This combination is the foundation of our success. The cornerstone of our philosophy is continuous development and improvement of diagnostic methods and procedures in disease management in the areas of oncology, transplantation, heart diseases, systemic diseases of childhood, urology, and many other fields. Further more, the UKE is home to the Martiniklinik (Martini Clinic), the world’s leading clinic for the treatment of prostate cancer.
The hospital now has more than 8,000 employees – including 2,000 doctors – and 1,500 beds. Each year, approximately 70,000 inpatients and 250,000 outpatients are treated, in addition to more than 50,000 emergencies. To ensure maximum privacy for our patients, the hospital has only 1- and 2-bed rooms. Modern and bright rooms provide a positive environment, and in our shopping arcade patients and their relatives find a mini-mart, a bank, post office, florist, a hairdresser and a beauty salon.
We also attend to the culinary wellbeing of our patients. In 2009, the Klinik Gastronomie Eppendorf (clinic catering) was named “caterer of the year.” Each day, patients choose from over 20 dishes. Religious and cultural dietary preferences are of course taken into consideration. Located on the UKE grounds are various restaurants such as “Mesa” and “Caffé Dallucci.”
Medical treatment, science and research at the UKE enjoy an excellent international reputation. The focus of our activities is always mankind. For many years patients from all over the world have therefore been coming to the UKE for medical treatment. The multilingual staff of the International Office coordinates all administrative, organizational and financial needs of these international patients.
